1. Paintsville Lake State Park

Sitting on the shores of Paintsville Lake, this state park covers approximately 240 acres and is a well-known destination among campers, water lovers, and wildlife watchers from the region. Created in 1986 and operated by the Kentucky Department of Parks, this nature reserve is located just 75 miles west of Chapmanville, making it possible to reach it in about one hour and a half via Robert C. Byrd Freeway.

As its name indicates, the main feature of this state park is Paintsville Lake, an artificial body of water created in the 1980s by the US Army Corps of Engineers. A well-known spot for boating, kayaking, and fishing, this lake provides habitat to healthy populations of rainbow trout, white bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, black crappie, white crappie, and walleye.

Some of the amenities visitors can enjoy during a visit to Chief Logan State Park include a lodge, a swimming pool, several hiking and biking trails, numerous picnic pavilions, and a miniature golf course. For anglers, however, the main attraction is Chief Logan Lake, a small body of water that is regularly stocked with specimens of trout and catfish

3. East Lynn Lake

Home to several species of fish indigenous to southern West Virginia, as well as large populations of largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, and hybrid striped bass, East Lynn Lake is another great destination for local anglers.
