Step back in time and into nature when you visit Chief Logan State Park near Logan, West Virginia. One of the most visited parks within West Virginia’s State Park System, those who visit can hike, fish, camp, stay at the historic lodge, or just take in the beauty of the area. Here’s a list of six top things to do while visiting Chief Logan State Park.

  1. HikingĀ 

You’ll find plenty of hiking opportunities within the park, whether you want a short stroll or want to embark on an adventure on one of the longer trails. Hike the 1.1-mile Lake Shore Trail, the 0.75-mile Waterfall Trail, or the 6-mile Wilderness Trail. No matter which trail you choose to hike, you’re surrounded by the unsurpassed beauty of forests, limestone cliffs, and rivers. Spring brings abundant wildflowers, and in the fall, the changing leaves turn the forest ablaze with color.

  1. Off-Roading

Enjoy the thrill of taking your ATV, UTV, or dirt bike on the nearby Hatfield-McCoy off-road trail system. The system includes Buffalo Mountain, Bearwallow, Devil Anse, and the Rockhouse trails. Make sure to read the rules and policies and always ride responsibly.

  1. Horseback Riding

Bring your horse and saddle and ride over the 18 miles of trails ideal for equestrians. You can also ride on the Hatfield-McCoy trail system with over 600 miles of trails to explore.

  1. Hunting And Fishing

Grab your fishing pole and head over to Chief Logan Lake and try your hand at catching stocked trout and catfish. Head to the shooting and archery ranges at the nearby Earl Ray Tomblin Wildlife Management Area to hone your skills. During the proper season, you can hunt for deer, grouse, turkey, and waterfowl. Make sure you have a current West Virginia fishing license and the Department of Natural Resources hunting license.

  1. The Museum

Learn more about the history of the park and the coal mining industry that helped shape West Virginia at the museum and visitors center in Chief Logan State Park. The museum features displays, photographs, and artifacts from the coal mining era.

  1. Lodging

Stay for a few days at Chief Logan Lodge, offering 75 rooms and suites. Eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the on-site restaurant, catch up on emails with free Wi-Fi, or workout in the fitness room. After a busy day exploring the park, take a swim in the indoor or outdoor pool, or relax in the hot tub.

If you’d like to sleep under the stars, pitch a tent or pull your RV into one of the 26 sites, 14 of which offer water, sewage, and electrical hookups. You can access the bathhouse and hot showers conveniently from all of the campsites. You can also bring the whole family and rent one of the four-room cabins. You get a large living area, fully-stocked kitchen, Wi-Fi, and upscale bath amenities.
